iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Design

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Design

For the first time, I find myself seriously contemplating a switch to the Pro Max. Historically, despite some performance advantages and superior features, Apple's largest handset always seemed too bulky to me. However, the new titanium construction of the iPhone 15 Pro Max has reduced its dimensions by fractions of an inch and shed almost 20 grams (equivalent to about half an ounce) compared to its predecessor. I mentioned this in my hands-on experience, and I'll reiterate it: The iPhone 14 Pro Max felt like it could shatter my skull if it landed on my face, whereas the new model might only leave a bruise or perhaps a dent.

This is likely due in part to the fact that the new iPhone sports slightly curved edges, which not only make them feel less sharp but also create the illusion of a slimmer device, even though it's actually a hundredth of an inch thicker than last year's model.

Speaking of minuscule measurements, the bezels on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have also been marginally reduced in size. This is primarily why Apple managed to maintain the same screen sizes while reducing the length and width of each device.

Combined with the smaller bezels, these overall design adjustments make the iPhone 15 Pro Max marginally more manageable with one hand. I appreciate the brushed metal finish on my Natural Titanium review unit, although I do wish Apple would introduce some brighter color options for the Pro lineup. This year, your choices are limited to the silver-ish shade I have, along with white, black, and blue – which frankly feels uninspiring. While many people immediately encase their new phones, some of us prefer to live a bit daringly and desire vibrant colors like those offered on the regular iPhone 15s.

Despite being smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still one of the weightier contenders in its category. The Pixel 7 Pro is slightly lighter at 212 grams (7.5 ounces), while the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra tops the scales at 234 grams (8.25 ounces). Meanwhile, the smaller Pro model is actually lighter than the S23 Plus (195 grams) and the Pixel 7 (197 grams, 6.9 ounces).

I haven't had the phones in my possession for an extended period, nor have I dared to subject these review units to the perils of my chaotic purse without a protective case, so I can't speak to the durability or scratch resistance of the titanium build just yet. Fortunately, both devices maintain the IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, providing peace of mind to those of us who tend to be a tad clumsy.

Two crucial external hardware changes stand out this year: the adoption of USB-C and the introduction of the Action button. If you're not actively looking for them, these differences may not be immediately apparent. The port at the bottom remains a port, while the button now protrudes slightly more than in previous models. Additionally, due to the iPhone 15 Pros' slightly smaller dimensions, your old case won't fit them anymore.
